Council fires worker who owed £6,120 in unpaid parking fines
LEWISHAM Council fired one of its workers after discovering they owed the local authority £6,120 in unpaid parking fines, we can reveal.
It is one of 23 cases in which the council took action against its own workers over fraudulent behaviour between 2024 and 2025.
Our Freedom of Information request discovered another worker was fired for providing a false reference, while a third was given the boot for failing to tell the council they had another job.
Another two employees were also caught working a second job but resigned while the council’s investigation was underway.
And a further 10 workers were found to be working another job but were not punished for it as the council found there was no conflict of interest.
In other cases, the local authority took disciplinary action over “excessive personal use” of data on council mobile phones.
An agency contract was axed over phone data misuse and another four workers were disciplined.

The council also received fraudulent job applications which were picked up during its pre-employment vetting processes.
It found one candidate had failed to provide accurate information on their application, while another could not explain “discrepancies”. A third had personal business interests that would conflict with the job they had applied for.
A Lewisham Council spokesman said: “The council has a zero tolerance policy to fraud and has robust processes in place to investigate any reports that are made.
“Unfortunately, we do experience fraud cases. The number of instances are usually very small but they are always investigated and acted upon thoroughly.
