Crashes on “death trap” road surge by more than 50% in a year
CRASHES on a “death trap” road in Bellingham have surged by more than 50% in a year, the Lewisham Letter can reveal.
Our Freedom of Information request discovered paramedics responded to 14 crashes on Southend Lane, in Bellingham, this year – up on nine smashes in 2024.
Locals believe the increase is down to the council’s introduction of a new bus lane, which they say is being used as a “speedway”.
In September, a 25-year-old moped rider died after a collision with a car in the bus lane – and in October another motorcyclist was hospitalised with serious injuries following a smash at the same spot.
Arif, the owner of SAS Signs on Southend Lane, told the Lewisham Letter: “The rise in crashes is not a coincidence. It’s all happened since the bus lane was introduced.

“The bus lane has almost created a speedway. Suddenly we have this new unoccupied lane – a very attractive empty bus lane for whoever fancies it.”
The businessman previously blamed September’s fatality on “council negligence” after changing the road layout without setting up a bus lane camera.
Police arrested a 52-year-old man on suspicion of causing death by careless driving while under the influence of drink or drugs after the fatal crash.

Lewisham Council previously told the Lewisham Letter in October that it was considering introducing traffic enforcement cameras.
In its response to our request for comment for this story it said it is still “examining the potential” for a camera.
A council spokesman said: “We were concerned to learn about recent collisions at Southend Lane.

“The Council takes road safety very seriously, and independent road safety audits were conducted prior to construction. We are carefully examining the potential for a traffic enforcement camera.
“A further road safety audit is being undertaken. In addition, further reviews, traffic observations and speed counts are ongoing.
“The road safety team regularly reviews reported personal injury collisions and will intervene if any underlying issues are identified.

More than 800 people have now signed a petition calling for an urgent review into the bus lane, which was introduced in June.
