Flea-ridden dog found in Deptford man’s “faeces-covered” property
A DEPTFORD man has been banned from owning dogs after officers found a flea-ridden Bullmastiff in his faeces-covered property.
Jamie Ross, 48, of Edward Street, Deptford, was charged with causing unnecessary suffering to a protected animal after the shocking discovery.
Ross had not taken the animal to the vet in eight years, despite it having a football-sized tumour on its leg and grazes all over its toes from where it had dragged them along the floor.
Judge Fleck handed Ross a 16-week suspended prison sentence for his crimes at Croydon Magistrates Court on Friday.
The judge said: “The dog had massive swelling on its right hind leg. Most of its femur was destroyed and there was large amounts of tissue swelling.

“I don’t consider you (Ross) are a fit and proper person to care for dogs. Your premises had faeces on the walls and your dogs were unable to access the garden.
“You knew your Bullmastiff was unwell but checks showed you had made no vet appointments for it since 2016.
“At the point it was seized it was in a terrible condition and it had to be put to sleep immediately.”
Max Riley-Gould, defending, said Ross accepted his care for the dog had been inadequate, although he argued the 16-year-old bullmastiff was “very old” and “always going to be ill” due to its age.
The lawyer added that Ross had depression and was responsible for looking after his two daughters.
Mr Riley-Gould said: “He (Ross) owned 11 dogs and 10 of them were healthy. This was a one-off incident. He loves animals.”
Croydon Magistrates Court heard Ross also owned a pitbull, although he insisted he had no idea it was a banned breed.
Police found the animals in Ross’s home on November 10, 2024 after being tipped off by Lewisham Council about animal welfare concerns.
Judge Fleck banned Ross from owning dogs for 10 years and also ordered the destruction of his pitbull.
