Lewisham Council under fire for blowing £5k on food at meeting
LEWISHAM Council has come under fire for “splashing out” almost £5k on food at its annual general meeting last year.
The TaxPayers’ Alliance said locals will take a dim view of the local authority spending £4,120 on the grub at the AGM in May last year.
Our Freedom of Information request uncovered the council also forked out £2,491 on the Mayor of Lewisham’s Community Awards Service on June 3 2025.
It comes after the local authority increased council taxes by 4.99% – the maximum hike allowed – earlier this year.
Benjamin Elks, grassroots development manager at the TaxPayers’ Alliance, said: “Local taxpayers will be rightly concerned at the bills Lewisham Council is running up for events.

“While some of these are worthy occasions, residents who have just been hit with yet another tax increase will take a dim view of their council splashing out thousands of pounds hosting an AGM.
“Lewisham council needs to ensure every penny of taxpayers’ cash delivers value for money and focus precious resources on frontline services.”
A total of £11,943 was also spent on food at last year’s Lewisham Council Staff Awards finale and Directorate Awards on November 18, although the local authority said this was paid for by the awards’ sponsors and not the taxpayer.
Lewisham Council also paid the following amounts for food at other events last year:
£1,796 (New Cross Fire Memorial 44th Anniversary)
£1,197 (Christmas Carol Service)
£675 (Holocaust Memorial Day)
£652 (Chanukah)
£516 (Remembrance Sunday)
£329 (Urban Synergy – an “insight day” for young people to learn about job opportunities at the council)

£192 (VE Day 80th anniversary)
£150 (Retirement Event for local community figure)
The council’s Freedom of Information team initially provided the Lewisham Letter with a different set of far higher figures.
However when we approached the local authority for comment on the story, a spokesman confirmed a member of the FOI team had made a mistake. They sent us the revised set of figures.
A Lewisham Council spokesperson said: “These events are part of our ‘civic events’ calendar and are designed to mark important local events that matter to our communities and to strengthen local relationships.
“We use local businesses wherever possible to ensure the money we spend on community events stays within Lewisham.”
