Man, 26, arrested over “arson” at University Hospital Lewisham
POLICE have arrested a 26-year-old man on suspicion of arson over a blaze at University Hospital Lewisham earlier this year.
London Fire Brigade sent around 70 firefighters to the hospital after the blaze erupted within the site’s psychiatric unit in the early hours of April 24.
The Lewisham Letter understands that patients were allegedly involved in starting the blaze.
The incident took place in the hospital’s Ladywell unit, which hosts South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust’s mental health in-patient service.
A spokesman for the Met Police told the Lewisham Letter: “Police were called at 02.37am on Friday, 24 April to University Hospital Lewisham following reports of a fire.
“Officers attended to support the London Fire Brigade and London Ambulance Service. No injuries were reported.

“Early enquiries deemed the fire to be suspicious, and an investigation was launched.
“Officers arrested a 26-year-old man at the scene on suspicion of arson with intent to endanger life. He has since been released on bail as enquiries continue.”
Adeniyi Aderinto, South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust’s Service Director for Lewisham, told the Lewisham Letter: “We are continuing to support ongoing investigations into this incident.
“We would like to thank all our colleagues whose quick and professional response made sure all our service users were safely evacuated and supported.
