McDonald’s cracks down on Uber Eats ‘free food hunters’
McDonald’s in Lewisham High Street has cracked down on Uber Eats “free food hunters”.
The restaurant was previously losing around £2,000 a month to scammer customers and crooked delivery drivers on Uber Eats, Deliveroo and other apps.
Some customers were ordering food through the apps and then falsely claiming items were missing, thereby claiming a refund.
Kanishka Perera, manager at McDonald’s in Lewisham High Street, said: “We installed CCTV cameras above our delivery packing area in April because we were losing too much money.
“Now if a customer complains about missing food we can show the apps that we packed it correctly and handed it to the delivery driver.

“Before we did this, some customers were stealing the food by reporting it as missing. And some of the drivers were stealing the food from the bag.
“We were losing more than £2,000 a month. Now it’s reduced to like £500 a month.”
Mr Perera said some customers also used to demand refunds if they did not receive the free sauce that they had ordered.
The manager added that this no longer happens as they now charge for condiments like ketchup.
It comes after Gee’s Kitchen, a Caribbean takeaway in Dudley, sounded the alarm about Uber Eats ‘free food hunters’ in a viral TikTok post.

In the TikTok video, the co-owner of Gee’s Kitchen filmed himself confronting a man over an alleged false refund claim.
In the clip, the co-owner tells the man: “Two days ago I did a delivery here, Uber messaged us and told us someone’s not had their order.
“The person I delivered to ordered about £70 worth of food and claimed back for it.
“My girlfriend and I run the business so whoever did it is affecting me directly.
“I’m feeling very violated. Uber won’t give me my money back. Keep in mind when you’re ordering from businesses, we’ve got your address.
“It doesn’t make any sense you trying to rip people off, we’re not McDonald’s. I’m just a business person trying to make my business successful.”
