Moment moped rider hit on ‘death trap’ road weeks after fatal crash
This is the shocking moment a moped rider was hit off her scooter on a “death trap” road where a fatal crash took place just weeks before.
The clip shows the rider being knocked into the air as her moped is smashed into pieces by the car. A photo of the scene shows the mangled wreck of her bike.
The rider was hospitalised with serious injuries after the crash on October 8.
Just over two weeks before, another moped rider – a 25-year-old man – died in a crash at the same spot.
Police arrested a 52-year-old man on suspicion of causing death by careless driving while under the influence of drink or drugs.
Locals are now campaigning for Lewisham Council to remove the new bus lane where both the crashes took place.

Arif, 41, the owner of SAS Signs on Southend Lane, said: “This fatality has been caused by the negligence of the council in not finishing this properly – by not installing the bus lane camera.
“Everything feels faster. When the traffic is piled up, the bus lane looks really attractive. It has become a speedway.”
Mahsun Korkmaz, who runs Ayten’s Diner in Southend Lane, said: “I’ve been here for two years and before the bus lane I’d never seen an accident here.

“Now in around two weeks we’ve had two accidents. They haven’t put a camera in so people just speed down the bus lane to skip the traffic – they know there’s no camera.
“They should get rid of the bus lane.”
Local resident Joan Rafferty, 67, added: “It’s a death trap and more people will die if they don’t change it.
“It’s a big problem. It should go back to how it was before.”
A petition calling for an urgent review into the new layout of the road has gathered more than 600 signatures.

A Lewisham Council spokesperson said: “We were concerned to learn about the recent collisions at Southend Lane.
“The recent fatal crash is under police investigation due to suspected driver impairment and the motorcycle collision is still under review.
“The Council takes road safety seriously, and independent road safety audits were conducted prior to construction.
“A further and planned road safety audit will be undertaken shortly. In addition, further reviews, traffic observations and speed counts are ongoing.

“We are also considering a range of enforcement measures such as traffic enforcement cameras.
The road safety team regularly reviews reported personal injury collisions and will intervene if any underlying issues are identified.
“In addition to the public consultation, we have further engaged with residents to gather feedback on the new layout and junction.
“We will continue to monitor the new layout as a priority and address the feedback if any issues arise.”
