Police crack down on shoplifting gang raiding garage “every day”
POLICE are cracking down on a gang of shoplifters raiding the same BP garage “every day”.
Locals say it’s a “free-for-all” at the Bromley Road garage, which also houses an M&S Food shop.
Sources say police are arresting members of the gang but they simply return to steal again as soon as they are released.
The garage is believed to be one of the worst hotspots for shoplifting in the whole borough.
Today we can name Stephen Quilter as one of the leading members of the gang that is plaguing the garage in Downham.

The 49-year-old, of Bellingham, who has dozens of previous convictions for theft, is banned from even walking onto the forecourt of the garage due to his past offences.
However, CCTV footage shows him calmly walking into the store in a high-vis jacket in July and snatching a whole tray of chocolate boxes in front of a shocked customer.
It is one of countless thefts that he has carried out over the past couple of years, a source told the Lewisham Letter. The same source said the garage is targeted “every day” by shoplifters.

A local told the Lewisham Letter: “It’s like a free-for-all in the garage. Every time I go in, the shoplifters come in with big bags fill them up and then just walk out. It’s so brazen.
“Everyone knows what’s going on. Last year I saw one of them stealing a whole shelf of de-icer.
“I think they know they will only get a slap on the wrist if they get caught so there’s nothing to lose.”

A source told the Lewisham Letter that the gang are ‘stealing to order’, meaning they go into the store looking for items requested by a pre-arranged buyer.
It has previously been reported how Kristie Macintosh raided the garage 19 times in 10 days in May last year.
The 36-year-old was jailed for six months for taking £2,330 worth of goods from the business.

Police Sergeant Kit Kauma said: “Shoplifting has a serious impact on local businesses, our economy and the wider community, and we’re determined to tackle it head on.
“We’re working closely with local businesses and partner agencies to both deter offending and address the factors that drive it.
“Our approach is evolving to meet this challenge with targeted operations and stronger links with the community; closing the space for offenders who think our high streets are easy targets.”
