THIS is the shocking moment a killer driver hit an 89-year-old grandad who later died from his injuries.
The clip shows Kamal Cayenne-Tonge attempting to overtake another car before slamming into James Darmody as he crossed Kent House Road in Sydenham last year.
Cayenne-Tonge, from Catford, stopped at the scene but then lied to police – with the help of his sister-in-law Neshay Osman James – blaming another driver for the smash.
However, officers soon discovered the truth after reviewing CCTV footage, which showed Cayenne-Tonge speeding down the road.
Mr Darmody’s family, who approved the release of the video, are now calling for safety measures to be introduced on Kent House Road to prevent further tragedies.
Cayenne-Tonge was jailed for 12 years for causing death by dangerous driving at Croydon Crown Court earlier this month.
Osman James, 24, was handed a suspended sentence for perverting the course of justice and told to complete 150 hours of unpaid work.
Commenting on the shocking footage, Mr Darmody’s granddaughter Martina Coady told the Lewisham Letter: “My grandfather was one step away from still being here today.
“He followed all the correct procedures to cross the road using the pedestrian refuge but still this car was speeding and overtook on the wrong side of the road.
“I want people to see and understand the devastating effect one man’s ego can have on others – all to ‘win’ a race or not lose face.”
Ms Coady, 36, is now campaigning for additional safety measures on Kent House Road.
She said: “If there had been some speed deterrents in place then he [Cayenne-Tonge] may have found it difficult to have reached such a high speed before colliding with my grandfather.”
Analysis of CCTV footage revealed that Cayenne-Tonge, of Scarlet Road, Catford, was driving at three times the 20mph speed limit in the run-up to the crash.
The Lewisham Letter reported earlier this week how Cayenne-Tonge initially denied his involvement in the smash.
He was caught on police bodycam telling a police officer he was just a witness and that a white Golf had hit Mr Darmody.
Osman James went even further, brazenly telling officers the driver responsible “was a fair skinned Caucasian man with spiky hair”.
But CCTV revealed Cayenne-Tonge was responsible, with the footage showing him racing down the wrong side of the road as the grandad made his way across the road.
The clip showed Cayenne-Tonge sharply braking, with the sound of screeching tyres ringing out in the street.
Mr Darmody suffered critical injuries died just over two weeks later in hospital.
Ms Coady emailed Lewisham Council in the aftermath of the smash calling for extra safety measures on the road, however she said she has still not received a reply.
